Ascania-Nova and the Oleshkovskiye Sands: the oasis and desert of Kherson region


Two unique natural monuments that owe their rise to the humans are located in the South of Ukraine, in the steppes of Northern Trans-Black Sea area. They are national parks Askanya Nova and Oleshkovka Sands. The National Parks employees have been engaged in preservation of rare species of animals and plants for more than 100 years now. The only in Europe part of virgin steppes has survived until our days there and the National Park's Zoo and dendropark are visited by 100,000 tourists annually. Oleshkovka Steppes is a real desert. The hills on its margins are covered with tufts of hard grass while lifeless dunes dominate the center of the Sands.

Berdyansk: Original Monuments and Golden Beaches

It is not for nothing that Berdyansk is called the pearl of the Northern Trans-Azov region: it is not just an industrial city with a big sea port but also one of the biggest centers of recreation, rest and tourism at the Azov Sea. Founded as a fishermen's small commercial village more than 180 years ago, today Berdyansk is considered to be one of the coziest and most beautiful cities of Azov. The Danube wetlands and Vilkovo, town on the water.

The mighty Danube, the longest river in the European Union, crosses ten countries before flowing into the Black Sea forming a vast delta. Numerous branches, canals and lakes generate a complex chain in Romania and Ukraine. Its Ukrainian seaside part makes a part of the Danube bioenvironmental reserve. This and a similar reserve on the territory of Romania form the ‘Danube Delta’ bioenvironmental reserve.

Transcarpathian salt mines and lakes 

Throughout many centuries salt has been one of the most important minerals in human life. In ancient times it was even used as an exchange tool and often cost more than gold. Therefore salt recovery and trade has always been a profitable business. In most countries salt mines were owned by rulers, who never missed this chance to continuously replenish public (or personal) treasury. Ancient salt mines in Bavaria are well known, as well as Velichka, Polish salt mine, (in the vicinity of Krakow), which is on the list of the most popular tourists routes in the country. There are plentiful salt deposits in Ukraine as well, including Artyomovskoye deposit, the largest in Europe (Donetsk oblast). Solotvinskiye mines have a minor share in total salt recovery volumes in Ukraine, since their passages and chambers are used differently. For 40 years they house… hospital wards.

Belaya Tserkov’ and Alexandria dendrological reserve

Belaya Tserkov’, a small town, is located in about 80 km from Kiev on the Ros’ River. Presently it is commonly known as one of industrial centers of our country, with its industrial part occupying the eastern part of the town. They also say that Belaya Tserkov offers the best pork fat (“salo”) in Ukraine: local farmers have their own pig breeding and feeding ‘know-how’. However, the history of this town has goes back into ancient times: it can remember the hordes of nomads burning it down several times. In XVI-XVIII centuries Belaya Tserkov’ became the center of numerous kazak and peasant uprisings, and in 1793 a park of astounding beauty was founded in the outskirts of the town, and up to date it is believed to be a true gem of the Ukrainian park design and architecture art.
